THE PRIMARY PURPOSE of Foundation grants is to contribute to Michigan State University's scholarly infrastructure of research, teaching and application of new knowledge. Grants also go to areas linked to the Foundation’s mission, including intellectual property and planned giving. In 2008, the Foundation awarded $14 million to the University, its faculty, and researchers.
Essential to the grants program is close collaboration with MSU’s Provost and its Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies. Both work with the Foundation board in awarding Strategic Partnership Grants, provide invaluable counsel to the board on special grants, and are responsible for administration of a number of grant categories.
The majority of the Foundation’s grants are allocated through the following three programs:
- Strategic Partnership Grants
- Capacity Building Grants
- Intramural Research Grant Program (IRGP)
STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP GRANTS
The Strategic Partnership program concentrates on major grants ranging from $500,000 to more than $1 million into key areas of research growth. They are used to leverage matching support from other sources, to provide seed funding for the development of new knowledge, and to initiate new centers of excellence at Michigan State University. These grants are treated as investments in the future development of MSU as one of the nation’s leading research universities.
Projects are funded based on the following criteria: scope and significance, the potential they have to use grant funds in leveraging additional resources, and the commitment of resources from the sponsoring college and department.
CAPACITY BUILDING GRANTS
This program is directed and administered by the MSU Provost and Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies. It encompasses a broad spectrum of University interests in research, teaching, and outreach. These grants range from $10,000 to $200,000. They are used to leverage other MSU resources to provide required externally funded grant matches and cost-shares, faculty recruitment and laboratory setup packages, and faculty retention packages, in addition to assisting in the limited support of a handful of University centers of excellence.
INTRAMURAL RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM (IRGP)
The Intramural Research Grant program has three areas of focus:
- Academic Diversity - support of faculty in areas where sufficient extramural support for scholarship and creative endeavors is not readily available
- New Faculty - support of new research-intensive academic appointed personnel
- Incubator Grants - support of existing researchers who are developing approaches to new and innovative research efforts with future funding potential.
IRGP awards are made competitively using Michigan State University faculty as peer reviewers and range from $3,000 to $75,000.
